St Mary's Church has been at the heart of this village since local records began. Legend has it that the village and church were originally founded by St Chad (died AD 672).
Whatever the case, there has been a church building on the present site since at least AD 1200, though the current building mostly dates from when it was rebuilt between 1520 and 1550. The list of rectors in the church porch goes back to 1200, and the Cheadle Cross dates back to a similar period.
For more information, why not pop in to St Mary's? There are some displays about bits of the history, and there is a guidebook available.
